Conservation Breeding

Cikananga Conservation Breeding Centre (CCBC) is located within Cikananga Wildlife Center and has the primary goal of breeding Endangered and Critically Endangered endemic Indonesian species. Within CCBC there is over 200 aviaries of varying specifications which are able meet the requirements of multiple species. The breeding of the species housed at CCBC is done so with the aim of maximising the genetic diversity of the population within CCBC and also worldwide.

The ultimate aim of our conservation breeding efforts is to improve the conservation status of the species we work with, this unfortunately is a long-term goal due to the complex root causes for these species decline in the wild. Whilst we try to improve the wild status of these species where possible, growing our local populations, as well as establishing satellite populations nationally and internationally, is recognised by CCBC to be just as important in the survival of these species due to their proximity to extinction.

Currently CCBC houses Black-winged Myna (Acridotheres melanopterus), Rufous-fronted Laughingthrush (Garrulax rufifrons rufifrons and Garrulax rufifrons slamatensis), Javan Green Magpie (Cissa thalassina), Sumatran Laughingthrush (Garrulax bicolor), Javan Pied Starling (Gracupica jalla) and the Javan Warty Pig (Sus verrucosus).

With generous support from institutions and donors from all around the world through funding and technical advice, CCBC has become a leader in breeding these species; contributing greatly to their conservation and husbandry knowledge.
