Rescuing Pangolins

On the 3rd of April we received a very sick pangolin from the forestry department. This beautiful animal was held with 8 others by somebody who was trading these animals, probably mainly to make traditional medicines from them! When the forestry police arrived at the trader 3 of them just died, the other 6 pangolins where brought to the office of the forestry department where we had to pick them up. But when our team arrived at the office, 5 of the pangolins had managed to escape from the cage where they were temporary housed in. The only one that was left in the cage was a very sick and weak pangolin; she had wounds and scratches all over her body, and had a terrible smell like a big infected wound, she was badly dehydrated, and had diarrhea and was vomiting.

At arrival in Cikananga we immediately started the medical treatment. But she was already very weak and almost didn’t react anymore. After the medical treatment we kept her warm in a box in a dark room, to let her rest and recover from all the stress she had been trough that day. Sadly that evening she died!
